He was the son of William Davis(1756-1834) and Isabella Scott(1768-1836). He married Elizabeth Shaffer in 1819. They had nine children: William Hugh,Simeon,George Shaffer,Alexander,Elizabeth,James Ray,Sarah,Henry E.(died in Civil War),Anna Margaret. They made their home on a farm in Hopewell Twp., behind what is now the Plan 11 Extension portion of Aliquippa.
