He was born in Dekalb County Tennessee, the son of George Washington League and Mattie Fernanders. He had 2 brothers and 4 sisters. He grew up on a farm and was a laborer and school bus driver as a young boy. He also played baseball and basketball. He moved to Madison County Alabama with his parents and later he worked at NASA for the rest of his working life. He married Mary Dorothy Kerbo on September 3,1959 in Dayton Georgia.They had one son. Woodrow died in 1981 after a battle with cancer.
