While standing watch at the Barlow toll road, which acted as a gateway to Oregon in 1847, James and his brother William, met their brides-to-be, Rachel and Rebecca Larkins, the pretty young daughters of William E. Larkins and his wife, Rachel Reed.

James & Rebecca married April 6, 1848 in Clackamas county, Oregon. To this union were born Carloline F "Carrie", William L, James Albion P, John L, Emma Jane, George Ansalom and James.
