Sarah Lemenda Smith Martin, "Little Sally" (1861-1891), was the daughter of George W. Smith and Sarah Catherine Dilley (1839-1929). She was born while her father worked on a plantation in Tensas Co. Louisiana. But the family returned before the war and lived in Yazoo County the rest of her life.

Sally's father, G. W. Smith was from a Green County, Alabama family, Jonathan and Mina Smith.

Sally's maternal grandfather was the Rev. Samuel M. Dilley (1802-1874). Her maternal grandmother was Charlotte Lemenda Hinds Usher (1872-1890).

Sally was born August 8, 1861, near Ashwood Landing in Louisiana and died in Conecuh County, Alabama. She is the Little Sally or just Sally often spoken of in The Smith – Dilley Collection of Civil War Letters. In 1883 she married Johnnie Jefferson Martin (1863-1945), the son of William P. Martin II (1822-1894) and Rebecca Fletcher (1830-1891).

The Martins were a pioneer family of Yazoo County that came to Mississippi before 1840 from Clarksville, Tennessee. She was born just before her father George returned to Mississippi and joined the Confederate Army.

Sally and Johnnie had three children--Mabel Irene (married Frank Jardine, Jake Strong and last to Charles (or Charley)(had 4 Children) Herrin, Samuel Luther (married Gracie Lee Smithhart had eight children) and Sarah Rebecca "Ree" (married Franklin Cargil and later married Tom Hair). Their last child, Johnnie D. Martin died at 1 year, 7 months, 15 days of age of the same disease, cholera, that took his mother's life a few days later. Sally lived a short life but was deeply loved by many.

It is possible that Johnnie D her toddler son may be buried with or close to his Mother.
