Pvt. George A. Altwein was one of approximately 200 American soldiers who died in the sinking of HMS Tuscania, attacked on February 5, 1918, by German submarine UB-77 off the western coast of Scotland in the North Channel.
Private Altwein was the son of Fred and Ella Altwein of Temple, and was attached to the 165th Depot Brigade, 36th Company, Camp Travis Detachment #2.
As with many other Tuscania victims, he was first interred at Kilnaughton, Isle of Islay, Scotland, on February 8, 1918. His body was exhumed and relocated to America in 1920 or thereafter.
