She was 95 years old and a religious sister for 77 years. Hedwig Bandyk was born on October 3, 1914 in Detroit, Michigan, the third of ten children born to John and Mary (Ostafin) Bandyk. She attended St. Hedwig Elementary School and the Seminary of the Felician Sisters (Felician Academy) in Detroit. Accepted into the Felician Congregation in 1933, Hedwig was invested with the Felician habit and received the name, Sister Mary Nepomucene, later changed to Sister Mary Mildred. She made her First Profession of Vows in 1935, and her Final Profession in 1941. Sister Mildred earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Madonna University and a Master of Arts from St. Bonaventure University in New York.
As both teacher and principal her ministry of teaching spanned 50 years at the following schools: St. Stanislaus, St. Casimir, Our Lady Help of Christians, and St. Andrew, all in Detroit; St. Joseph and Lumen Christi, Jackson; St. Michael and Ladywood High School, Livonia; St. Valentine, Redford; Holy Spirit, Grand Rapids; St. Mary, Parisville; St. Florian, Hamtramck; St. Damian, Westland; and Catholic Central, Manistee. Sister Mildred served the Montessori Center of Our Lady as the Secretary / Receptionist for the last eleven years of active ministry. A woman of deep prayer, her daily hour of adoration before the Eucharistic Lord was a source of strength and peace. Sister emanated a true Franciscan‐Felician spirit. In 2003 Sister was permanently assigned to Blessed Angela Convent in the infirmary. At 12:05 p.m. on June 2, 2010, death came suddenly and unexpectedly. Sister Mildred journeyed to meet the One whom she so faithfully served for 95 years, 77 in religious life.
