Edith was the second child born to Horace and Louella Dieke Gould. When she was a very little girl, her parents moved from Wisconsin to Stanley County, South Dakota, and this is where she grew up and attended school, graduating from high school.

On June 25, 1927 she and Henry G. Bartels were married at Fort Pierre by Rev. J. Charles N. Pengelly. They then farmed in Lyman County, south of Fort Pierre, on a farm adjoining Henry's older brother, Albert.

Edith was the mother to five sons: Robert, Larry, John, Edward, and Richard. After retirement they moved to Pierre, where Henry preceded her in death by more than 14 years. She was survived by all of her children except Richard.
