Mary Ayres was a daughter of Rev. William Ayres (1798-1863) and his wife Mary Shaw (1805-1863) of Marion County, South Carolina. While in the Army during the War, her uncle John "Jack" Ayres, became ill with smallpox. He returned home where he died 15 Jan. 1863. Mary and her parents had also contracted the disease. Her father died on the 30th Jan., and Mary and her mother both died on 17th Feb. 1863.
