Dr. Robert W. Gilmore

Robert W. Gilmore, M.D. of St. Simons Island, Georgia, formerly of Michigan City, died May 30, 2010, after a battle with cancer.
Dr. Gilmore was born on May 25, 1920 in Michigan City. He was the younger of two sons of Dr. Russell A. Gilmore and Lillian Gilmore. His older brother, Russell A. Gilmore Jr., passed away two years ago.

Dr. Bob was a graduate of Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, (Class of 43). He graduated from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Bob served as a physician in the U.S. Navy at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After his military service he completed his residency in pediatrics at Cook County Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He then practiced medicine in Michigan City as a Board Certified Pediatrician from 1949 until his retirement in 1995. During his practice he served as Chief of Staff at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, and also was a staff pediatrician at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Bob married the former Helen Louise Clift of Bay City, Michigan in 1944, who survives. Dr. Bob and Mrs., Gilmore have three children who survive, son, Judge Robert W. Gilmore Jr. (Ret.) and his wife Barbara, who reside in Waverly, Georgia; son, Dr. Peter C. Gilmore and his wife Elizabeth who reside in Yakima, Washington; and daughter, Gina Reed (Gilmore) and husband Tony who reside in Jupiter, Florida. Dr. Bob and Mrs. Gilmore have four grandchildren, Lori Miltenberger, Valparaiso, Geoffrey Gilmore, Birmingham, Michigan, Tracy Gilmore, Chicago, and Tony Gilmore, Portland, Oregon. They also have five great-grandchildren, Emily, Madeline and William Miltenberger and Mia and Geoffrey Gilmore.

Dr. Bob cared for thousands of children in the Michigan City area during his practice. In 1998, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. The Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest honor the Governor of Indiana can bestow upon a citizen of Indiana.

In 2005 Dr. Bob and Mrs. Gilmore moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, to do their favorite thing, play golf. Dr. Bob loved family, loved friends, loved his patients, loved golf and loved life.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City at a private family service.
