Alan C. Abeel, Jr., known as "Chick" to his friends died December 28, 2004 following a long illness. He was 80 years old.

Born in Saugerties, NY to Alan Chichester Abeel and Anne Coleman Phelps Abeel, Alan Chichester Abeel, Jr. was raised in Larchmont, NY and settle in Westfield in early 1950's where he lived until his death. He had been a Boy Scout, and took pride in having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

In 1947 he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Lehigh University where he majored in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, managed the University's hockey team and earned a US Army commission through ROTC.

He served with the Third and Seventh armies and the Hawaii Department during WWII and the Korean War.

He was a forty-plus year veteran of what is now known as Exxon/Mobile. He began his career with Esso Research in Linden, NJ. After his research earned several patents, he transferred to the international side of the business where his work in refinery operations and logistics took him throughout Europe, the Middle East, East Africa, Southern Asia, Australia, Japan and South America.

He had been member of Westfield Community Players in the 1960's active in various capacities both on and off-stage. He was an avid sailor and life-long skier who was a member of the US Power Squadron where he attained the rank of Navigator and later in life the Seventy-Plus Ski Club. He was also a member of the PC 101 Club.

He volunteered for many years with the IRS's Tax Preparation for the Elderly Program providing free counsel and filing assistance to senior citizens.

He was survived by his wife Judith Mereness Abeel, a daughter Karen Behringer of Newburyport, Massachusetts, a son Christian M. Abeel of Scotch Plains, a sister Julie Heath of Richmond, California, a step-daughter Cheryl Keith of Goose Creek, South Carolina, a step-son Dave Wilcox of Jackson, Wyoming and eight grand and step-grand children.
