BARRE, VT. — Wendell I. Pixley, 84, died early Saturday morning, May 29, 2010, at his home in Barre, Vt. He was born August 27, 1925 in Hanover, New Hampshire, the son of Irving O. and Gladys (Ballou) Pixley. He grew up in South Strafford and graduated from Thetford Academy in the class of 1943. After school, he worked for his dad on the family farm. Wendell served in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in Korea. It was during this time he became interested in engineering. In 1947, after his honorary discharge, he returned to Strafford and attended the Vermont School of Agriculture in Randolph, Vt. Later, he was employed at the Strafford's Elizabeth Copper Mine. On June 12, 1949, he married his classmate and high school sweetheart, Margaret Brockway and they lived in South Royalton, Vt. For the next nine years Wendell continued working in the mine first as an elevator boy, then later as a driller and at the time of the closing of the mine in 1958, he had advanced up to the position of Chief Engineer. He accomplished this by taking correspondence courses and then received his Professional Engineering Certification. Wendell continued his engineering career as a civil engineer for the State of Vermont Highway Department for the next thirty years retiring in 1987. Margaret and Wendell have lived in Barre, Vt., since 1961 and following his retirement, he and his wife split their time between Barre and Lehigh Acres, Fla.

He was a member of the. F &. A. M Masonic Lodge Rising Sun Lodge of South Royalton, VT., past patron of the Eastern Star, the 251 Club of Vermont, the Vermont Retired State Employees Association and was very active with the Thetford Academy Alumni Association. He and Margaret attended nearly every Alumni Day celebration since their graduation. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, traveling and visiting family. Wendell was an avid Red Sox Fan and enjoyed watching them during spring training in Florida and throughout the regular season.

He is survived by his wife of Barre, VT, a daughter, Priscilla M. Reyns and her husband Michael of Walpole, N.H., a son, Charles W. Pixley and his wife Katherine of Middleton, N.H., four grandchildren, Diana Dumont and her husband, Martin of Dover, N.H., Paul Reyns of Amherst, Mass., Andrew Pixley of Middleton, N.H., Emily Reyns of Boston, Mass., a great grandson, Jackson Dumont, a sister, Eschol Goodell of Littleton, N.H., as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon, June 1, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Barre, Vt., with the Pastor Carl Hilton van Osdall officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in the Wilson Cemetery in Barre, Vt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Home & Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Berlin, VT 05602 or the to the Thetford Academy Alumni Association, PO Box 190, Thetford VT 05074. The Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Vermont is assisting with arrangements.
