J. M. Colvin, proprietor of the Hotel Colvin, was fatally injured Sunday night at 8:30 o'clock. While attempting to cross Main Street he was struck by an automobile driven by C. J. Boyett, 24 year old son of Mr. H. L. Boyett. Mr. Colvin was enroute from a restaurant where he had gone to supper, to the hotel, when the accident occurred. It happened almost in front of the hotel. He was accompanied by Bruce Broadwell, Shreveport salesman, who was unharmed.
The unfortunate man was thrown face downward on the pavement and his right leg was so badly mangled that it had to be amputated. He also sustained internal injuries and numerous cuts and bruises. He was taken to the Fittz-Faith Clinic where he died at one o'clock Monday morning.
Deceased was born and reared in Lincoln Parish and was a member of a large and influential North Louisiana family. He was a member of the Board of Parole of the State Penitentiary, and was a former sheriff of Lincoln Parish, having served two terms in that capacity prior to coming to Winnfield to take charge of the Hotel Colvin about six or eight years ago.
He is survived by his wife and the following children: Justin Colvin of Jonesboro; Lamar Colvin of Winnfield; and Mrs. Ruth Andrews who teaches in Mexico. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. J. A. Colvin of Winnfield, three brothers and five sisters. They are: W. C. Colvin, Mrs. A. T. Drewett, Sr., Mrs. W. F. Dickerson, Mrs. Daisy Chelette, Winnfield; T. H. Colvin, of Alexandria; Mrs. L. M. Lafleur of Opelousas; Mrs. G. E. Bozeman of El Paso, Texas, and C. L. Colvin of Georgetown.
Funeral services were held from the family residence in Ruston with interment in the Ruston [Greenwood] Cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the last rites.
