William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas

G.W. Newman & A.A. Newman, dry goods merchants, began business in Emporia in 1869, under the firm name of Newman Bros. From 1872 to 1878 G. W. Newman carried on the business alone. His brother, F. C. then became associated with him, the firm name being G. W. Newman & Co. The first year's business amounted to $25,000. The sales in 1881 amounted to $200,000, sixteen men and women being employed by the establishment. The trade is almost exclusively retail, the house doing a little jobbing business.

VETERAN BANKER OF EMPORIA DIES AT HOME

Emporia, Kas., Nov. 27 (AP)--Fred C. Newman, 74, veteran Emporia banker, died at his home here after a several months illness.

Mr. Newman last week sold the controlling interest in the Citizens National Bank of Emporia, of which he was president, to W. T. Kemper, Kansas City, and M. A. Limbocker, Burlington, Kas.

Coming to Emporia to work for his brother, George A. Newman, a dry goods merchant, Mr. Newman later went to Osage City, finally returning to Emporia.

He has been president of the Citizens Bank since 1892 except for a short time about 6 years ago when his son, Calvin H. Newnan, headed the institution.

He is survived by his son, and one daughter, Mrs. W. W. Postlethwaite, Colorado Springs; two sisters, Mrs. R. C. Haywood, Berkeley, Cal., and Mrs. Hattie Purlington, Trona, Cal., and five grandchildren.
