James Donald Sears
James Donald Sears, 75, longtime Boise resident, peacefully passed away in his sleep at home on March 24, 2009. Jim was born on Sept. 8, 1933 in Nampa, Idaho a son of William Ansyle Sears and Mabel Collins Sears. Jim attended schools in Idaho and Oregon and worked at Shore Lodge in McCall, Idaho before joining the U.S. Navy, Jan. 5, 1951. He was a Boatswains Mate Seaman on the USS Edmonds Aircraft Carrier and the USS Valley Forge Aircraft Carrier. He served in the Korean War and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal, and received an Honorable Discharge on June 23, 1954. Following his tour in the military Jim decided to further his education. He graduated from Boise Junior College on June 3, 1956 with an Associate Arts Degree. After graduation Jim worked at El Paso Natural Gas Co. for several years when he decided to again further his education and graduated from the College of Idaho with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art on June 3, 1961. Three weeks after graduation Jim married his sweetheart, Marion Ruth Manning and was employed at Hercules Powder Co. in Salt Lake City as a Office Supply Manager. During this time a beautiful set of twins were born, Barry Allen and Sherry Ann. In 1966 Jim returned to his first love, the natural gas business, which led him to career advancements throughout the years with many family relocations around the Northwest. He was employed by Northwest Pipeline, and later the Williams Company. Jim held various positions including Office Manager, Budgeting, Engineering, Human Resources, Management Trainer, Contract Specialist, Material Supervisor, Microwave Installment Assistant, Safety Inspector, and Encroachment Specialist. Jim loved the outdoors and spent many vacations with his family at their cabin in the Secesh Meadows, Idaho. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, carpenter, painter, and could create something beautiful out of discarded items. Jim was a fifth generation offspring of Daniel Boone and had Daniel's frontiersman spirit and quick wit. As a husband, Jim was a wonderful protector and provider for his family. He was loved and respected by his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marion Manning Sears, and two children, Barry Allen Sears and his wife, Nathalie Sears, of Glen Ridge, N.J. and Sherry Ann Sears Thomas and her husband, Thomas Thomas, of Caldwell, Idaho. He is also survived by his brother William Ansyle Sears of Orofino, Idaho, and five grandchildren, Jennifer Thomas Emmons, Terence Thomas, Harrison, Diego, and Violette Sears, and four cousins. A viewing will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009 at Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W. Bannock St., Boise, Id. A funeral will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at Crossroads Alliance Church, 1400 No. Cole Rd., Boise, Id. A graveside service will be held Monday, 1 p.m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10101 North Horseshoe Bend Road, Boise, Id.
