Memorial held for Garth Caylor 03/21/2001

Garth William Caylor, a longtime petroleum geologist in Tulsa, Okla., died of natural causes March 13 at the Forum retirement community in Dallas. Mr. Caylor, 85, was the father of Diane Caylor Galloway, a frequent contributor to The Dallas Morning News' Park Cities section. A memorial was held Friday at NorthPark Presbyterian Church in Dallas. He was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa.
Born in Hugo, Okla., Mr. Caylor attended Harvard University and earned his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Oklahoma in 1938. He worked for Shell Oil Co. for nine years before becoming a consulting geologist in Tulsa. His 51-year career in the oil business included serving as vice president and director of the Oil Capitol Corp. in Tulsa. He served in many professional and civic organizations, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, where he was a former regional president and received the group's 1982 Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Caylor was an ordained deacon, elder and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. He had played saxophone and clarinet since he was 13. He moved to Dallas in 1994. Mr. Caylor is survived by his daughters, Diane Caylor Galloway of Dallas and Carole Caylor Johnston of Houston; a son, Garth William "Bill" Caylor Jr. of Tulsa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
