The son of George & Margaret Catherine Bupp or Bopp, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and hazel.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 8 as a private Co. D, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16, 1864, as a private with Co. I, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry (108th Pa), and discharged by surgeon's certificate June 6, 1865.

He married Isabella Graybill and fathered Anna (b. @1867), Caroline (b. 03/09/72 - married a Rennoll), Emmedia (b. 10/18/72 - married George Caffield), Margaret K. (b. 01/06/78), and Walter H. (b. 01/02/92). In 1870-90, he lived in North Codorus Township, York County, but died in the York County almshouse from "arteriosclerosis" leading to "paralysis."
