Jay A. Herring, 82, Wathena, died Sept. 26, 2003, at a Leavenworth Hospital. He was born March 12, 1921, in Princeton, the son of Frank and Thelma Graves Herring.

Mr. Herring was a farmer and stockman in northeast Kansas, particularly in the Highland area.

He served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He was wounded in combat and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5531 in Wathena and he served as Kansas Department Commander in 1986 and 1987. He was a 45-year member of American Legion Post 161 and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

He married Melba Talkington on Sept. 7, 1946, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Bill Herring, Wathena, Kenneth Herring, Highland, and Frank Herring, St. Joseph, Mo.; a daughter, Joyce Miller, Lecompton; six sisters, Leola McLain Wanamaker, Blue Rapids, Helen Sheldon and Evan Rasch, both of Topeka, Mary Robison and June Ashley, both of Denison, and Nelda McMillan, Mayetta; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Jim; and two sisters, Lynette Fleming and Ruth Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland. The Rev. Terry Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery near Highland. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sept. 30, where the family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Wathena EMS, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O.
