MISS EMMA A. SHUMWAY, pioneer Seattle educator, died at her home at Kirkland at the age of 79 years. She came to Seattle in 1884 and taught in the old Seattle High School when there were only three teachers in the school. At that time Seattle had only eighteen teachers engaged in the entire city. For a long period she was vice principal of the school. She also helped organize the first high school in Tacoma.
Miss Shumway was one of the early members of the Woman's Century Club in Seattle. She was a member of Rainier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and one of the group of women who organized the first public library in Seattle.
She lived in Seattle until 1910. Her family built a home at Kirkland, now known as the Shumway Mansion. She was active in the Kirkland Woman's Club, of which she was a charter member. She was a member of the Congregational Church at Kirkland. Emma's birth name was Emily.
