Stuart Edwin Olson, 75, of Ontonagon passed away Friday, October 9, 2009 at Aspirus Long Term Care Facility in Ontonagon.

Stu was born January 3, 1934 in Ishpeming, Michigan and he graduated with the Ishpeming High School Class of 1951. Stu worked the A & P Grocery Store and in the sample room of Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company in Ishpeming. Later, he enlisted with the United States Marines to serve his country during the Korean War conflict. He graduated from field music school and boot camp in San Diego, California. While stationed in Seattle, Washington, guarding the U.S. Naval Station, Stu served as bugler playing "taps" at many official functions and he met the love of his life, Delores Haraldson, who was working as a clerical worker for the Navy. Stu achieved the rank of Sergeant.

Following his honorable discharge, Stu worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle doing pressure testing on aircraft. He later attended computer training and discovered that his 'math brain' and knack for calculation enabled him to write programs naturally, and it was a good fit. Stu worked as a computer programmer for the University of Washington and later for Boeing Aircraft in its Computer Department. On October 17, 1958, Stu and Delores were married in the First Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington. Both were avid college football fans and they attended many Washington Huskies games together. In 1962 their daughter Cheryl was born. Seeking escape from city life and a better place to raise a family, Stu and Delores left Seattle for Ontonagon in 1966 and Stu took employment with White Pine Copper Company, working as a computer programmer. On their Anniversary that year, daughter Julie was born.

Stu enjoyed going to bingo in Rockland, watching football, college hoops, CNN and action movies on TV, making his weekly football picks, visiting with friends around the coffee table at Pat's, and most of all...being a Grandpa. He was a loyal Detroit Lions fan, even though it wasn't always easy. Stu loved life and he had a way of making others smile...whether it was doing one of his carnival barker impressions, telling a joke, doing a little dance, or engaging others in lively political discussion. Stu believed in the higher power and was grateful for the many years of sobriety that he enjoyed-- and for those who were there to support and help him 'stay the course'.

Stu is survived by his wife of 50 years, Delores; daughters, Cheryl Olson and Julie Olson of Ontonagon; beloved granddaughter, Ashly Ekdahl of Ontonagon; sister, Diane (Joeseph) Petrany of Ishpeming; brother-in-law, Delwyn (Marina) Haraldson of Bellevue, Washington; nieces, Lisa (Matt) Rettke and Family of Honolulu, Hawaii, Tina (Chris) Bosio and Family of Traverse City, Michigan; nephews, Delwyn Haraldson, Jr. of Colorado, Roberto Haraldson and Francios Haraldson, both of Los Angeles, California; and John Haraldson of Corvallis, Oregon; along with many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Irene (Hooper) and George Olson of Ishpeming, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held at Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon on Thursday, October 15 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Cherrie Sporleder officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the Service. Burial will take place at the Riverside Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Ontonagon County Veterans' Association.

Cane Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
