Neil Englebert Store, 91, was called to heaven on Friday, April 4, 2008 from his home in Green, MI. He was the last surviving child born to Henry and Greta (Luhti) Store. Neil was born on September 25, 1916.

Neil was educated at the Cranberry School in Green. He enlisted in the CCC's, serving at Camps Jumbo and Pori in 1934-35.

Neil was a WWII Purple Heart Veteran, suffering a near fatal gun shot wound on Christmas morning, 1944, while on the island of Moratai in the South Pacific. He vowed that if he once set foot under his mother's table, he would never leave Green again and upon his discharge that's just what he did. He was honorably discharged, having served in the US Army for 3 A½ years during 1942-1945.

Once back in the U.P., Neil met his wartime pen pal, Bertha Irene Wesman, Ewen, and married her on December 22, 1945. She took excellent and loving care of him.

Neil spent most of his working years on construction projects across the area including M-107, the White Pine mine, Cane Court, the Konteka, the Ontonagon Hospital, the Victoria Bridge and many, many others. His family will remember him each time they see one of the places he helped to build.

Neil lived and died on the family farm. He was proud to have hosted the centennial celebration of that property in 2005, surrounded by many friends and relatives.

Anyone who knew Neil knew that he loved to 'deal'. After his retirement he had fun buying junk and selling treasures. He especially enjoyed visiting with everyone that shopped at his garage sales. He liked to show people his elephant gun and pull a carrot from his garden for them. He also liked to be called, 'Grandpa Neil' by everyone.

Neil was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of Redeemer Free Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bertha; daughters Karen (Sonny) Linna, Sally (Doug) Karttunen, Vicki (Mike) White, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great grand son, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, 3 sisters, his beloved son and daughter-in-law Ken and Veronica Store.

Visitation for Neil will be at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church, Ontonagon, Sunday April 6, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Funeral services will be Monday, April 7th, at the church, beginning at 4 p.m. with visitation an hour before the service. Services will be conducted by Pastor Dean Franz, Cane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
