Another Pioneer Called By Death.

On last Thursday evening, July 22, 1920, at his home in this city occurred the death of Conrad William Borcherding, another one of this community's pioneer residents, after a several weeks illness, and at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 16 days. Deceased was born at Gross Farlein, Germany, on October 31, 1846, later coming to the United States, settling in the state of Texas. A number of years ago he came to Jefferson township, Clayton county, Iowa, where he was successfully engaged in farming for many years. He was married to Miss Caroline Kregel. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Borcherding came to Guttenberg to reside, where deceased lived until his death. Mr. Borcherding was an ambitious man during his entire life, and a kind and true husband, father and friend. Doing kind acts for others was his greatest pleasure in life, which won him many friends, by whom he will be remembered. He was a patient sufferer and all that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest, was done for him to ward off death, but all to no avail. His death is deeply mourned by his aged wife, five sons, Henry, William, Fred, Gut and Otto, of Jefferson township, one daughter, Mrs. Chas. Harnish of Jefferson township, sixteen grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in this city last Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. Jansig officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relative and friends from far and near, which showed that the deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
