FARMER KILLED WHILE DYNAMITING STUMPS

L. F. Mitzel, Near Pleasant Green, Met a Tragic Death

CATASTROPHE OCCURRED TUESDAY

Skull Crushed by Portion of Stump Hurled Into the Air - Funeral Yesterday at Mt. Nebo

While dynamiting stumps on his farm, 1 u miles east of Pleasant Green, early Tuesday Morning, Lemuel F. Mitzel, a well-known farmer, met a tragic death. In company with George Robinson, a young farmhand, Mr. Mitzel was blowing out stumps with dynamite in a field about three-fourths of a mile northeast of his residence. He had put a charge of dynamite in a stump and walked away a distance of 65 steps when the charge exploded, hurling a portion of the stump toward Mr. Mitzel and striking him with great force on the top of the head. The skull of the unfortunate man was crushed and he lived only a few minutes after the accident occurred. Young Robinson hurried to the home of a neighbor and summoned Dr. J. S. Parrish, at Pleasant Green, who could do nothing when he arrived, death having already occurred. Funeral services were held at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. D. H. Howerton, of this place, officiating. The services were largely attended. Interment took place in the church cemetery. Mr. Mitzel was born and lived his entire life in Clear Creek township. He passed his forty-seventh birthday March 29 last. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Belle Cole, and the date of the wedding was March 4, 1890. To this union was born one daughter, Miss Audrey Mitzel, now a teacher in the Sedalia public schools. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Mitzel was united in marriage to Miss Emma Woolery, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Woolery, on December 24, 1896, and to this union were born four daughters and five sons, all of whom are left with the wife and mother to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Mr. Mitzel is also survived by one brother, James H. Mitzel, of near Pleasant Green. The deceased was a successful farmer and businessman, having served as director in the Bank of Pleasant Green for the past eight or nine years. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him and was a man of integrity and honor. To the grief-stricken family, the Eagle extends sincere sympathy.
