He was the son of Wilhelm Warenskjold and Elise Tvede. He was married to Florida Elizabeth Pate in 1878. He was the father of at least nine children, five girls, and four boys. He was divorced by 1900 and lived with his oldest daughter, Fannie Warenskjold Webb and her husband Thomas Webb until his death. After his death, his family changed their last name to Van Shaw and most of them are buried in the city cemetery in Amarillo Texas. His former wife is buried in Amarillo also. He was a good and well respected man in his community.
