Marie was the eldest of 4 children born to Joseph Patrick Cadieux and Louse Ann Wright. Her mother died of childbed fever 30 days after the birth of her youngest, when Marie was 10 years old. The 3 girls were subsequently farmed out to their maternal relatives, each in separate families, while their brother remained with their father. This separation shaped my grandmother's strong sense of family. She faced further loss when her brother died at age 20 in a scarlet fever epidemic. She lost her sister Josephine shortly thereafter from TB. She was a strong woman who worked hard all her life to provide for her family.
