Marie was the eldest of 4 children born to Joseph Patrick Cadieux and Louse Ann Wright. Her mother died of childbed fever 30 days after the birth of her youngest, when Marie was 10 years old. The 3 girls were subsequently farmed out to their maternal relatives, each in separate families, while their brother remained with their father.
