Although the gravestone is inscribed 1878, Annie was actually born 11 Aug 1877 in Clay County, Texas, the daughter of Robert and Lucretia (Ferguson) Rickard. Kate or Katie, as she was sometimes called, married in about 1898 to Thomas Flanigan and they had one daughter, Sylvia May. In 1900 Kate was still married but no longer living with Thomas (they were later divorced).

It is believed that Kate followed her brother, George "Tex" Rickard to Alaska and worked for him in his gambling halls as an entertainer. It may be that she met Andrew (Andreas) P. Garberg there. He left Alaska and bought a farm in Nevada in about 1904. They were married 27 Jun 1905 in Tacoma, WA. Sylvia was living with Annie and Andreas in 1910 in Beatty, Nye County, Nevada.
