According to church records, Andrew was actually born 21 Sep 1873 on the Garberg farm and christened with the name Andreas. He was the 8th of nine children born to Peder Poulsen Garberg and Anne Olsdatter Uglem.

Andreas left Norway and came first to Minnesota in about 1892. (Eventually his name was Americanized to Andrew, although he continued to use Andreas for some time.) After about a year Andrew left Minnesota and went on to Washington where he was a logger and fisherman on Puget Sound. When the Alaskan gold rush started in 1898 he left for Dawson City and then continued on to Nome, Alaska in 1899 where he prospected for gold. After about five years he returned to the lower states and bought a farm in Nevada.

On 27 Jun 1905 Andrew married Annie Katherine Rickard Flanigan in Tacoma, WA. He may have met Annie in Alaska where she spent some time working for her brother as an entertainer in a gambling establishment. Annie had one little girl, Sylvia May Flanigan, from a previous marriage.
