The Reverend Elmer Oscar Nelson, 84, Minot and formerly of Velva, and longtime South and Central America Nazarene missionary, died on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in a Minot nursing home.

Elmer was born on May 14, 1925 in Velva, ND to Swen and Blanche (Shaw) Nelson. He was raised on a farm south of Velva and entered into active duty service with the U.S. Army in 1942.
He served in the Pacific Theatre of World War II, fighting on the front lines of a number of battles. Upon completion of the war, he was assigned as one of General Douglas McArthur's body guards in Tokyo, Japan.
Elmer received his honorable discharge in March of 1946 and returned to North Dakota, where he married Dorothy Bearman on June 10, 1947 in Velva, ND. They made their home in Pasadena CA, where he attended and graduated from Pasadena Nazarene University in 1952 with a bachelor of arts degree in religion. He returned to North Dakota as an ordained Nazarene minister and served as the Pastor of Denhoff Church of the Nazarene for three years.
Elmer and Dorothy were appointed missionary ministers by the Nazarene church and they ministered in Panama for twenty years, Argentina for four years, the Dominican Republic for three years and Paraguay for four years. They returned to the U. S. in 1989. Since then, they have traveled throughout the U.S. and resided in Georgia until moving to Minot in 1997. Rev. Nelson especially enjoyed gardening, traveling, lecturing and photography.
His loving family includes: his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; children: Deborah (Rev. Steven) Baker of Madera CA, Dorcas "Dori" Nelson and special friend, Manuel Delgado of Minot; Delight Fortner, Smyrna, FL; grandchildren: Rex, Calvin & Nelson Baker, Charrise & David Fortner, Alexandra & Barron Nelson; 10 great grandchildren; sisters: Agnes Jobegen of South Dakota, Esther Anhorn of Sanger CA and Edith Nelson of Kingsburg CA; brother: Arnold Nelson of Sanger CA; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rev. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, son, Daniel and brothers: Urban, Donald, Dareld, Leonard and Earl Johnson.
