Mildred S. Hieb was born on March 1, 1914 to Henry and Augusta (Manska) Wietgrefe at Ipswich, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Ipswich High School in 1931.
Mildred married Walter Hieb on December 2, 1937 at Brainerd, MN. They made their home in Ipswich until moving to Selby, SD in 1941. After raising her children she served as a nutritionist at the Selby School.
However, she spent most of her life doing volunteer work. For 25 years Mildred volunteered at the Selby Nursing Home as a "Grey Lady" and was also active in all the Church activities at St. John's Lutheran Church.
They moved to Mina, SD in 1989, where they helped build and were charter members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.
They moved to Rapid City in 1994, where they were members of Atonement Lutheran Church, until her husband of 59 years passed away.
At this time she moved back to Selby and in 2001 she began making her home in Aberdeen.
The joy of Mildred's later years was spent rocking babies at the Bethesda Daycare Center in Aberdeen as part of the Foster Grandparent Program.
In November of 2009, she moved into Bethesda Town Square and spent her last days at Bethesda Home, just down the hall from all the babies she rocked at the Daycare.
Grateful for having shared Mildred's life are two daughters, Eldene Henderson of Rapid City and Verla Schumacher of Mina, one son Robert (Bev) Hieb of Rapid City, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Mariel, six brothers, one sister and one great grandson.
