Sophia, the sixth child of eight children born to Joachim and Fredericke, was born in Scheessel, Hannover, Preussen, Germany. She was baptized July 4, 1869.

She and William Mahlendorf were married in Douglas County, Nebraska March 29, 1890. Ten years later they had six of their twelve children. They farmed in the Marble Precinct of Saunders County, Nebraska. By 1910 she, William, and now 9 children were living in Boyd County, Nebraska. (*They had two set of twins, all boys, but the first set saw the death of one twin at age one year, and his brother at age fourteen). William was still farming and two of his older boys were now helping. 1920 found them still farming in Spencer Township, Boyd County, Nebraska. By 1930 William age 69 and Sophia age 60 were living in Anoka, Boyd County, Nebraska and only the youngest child was still living at home. That was Bennie, age 16. Apparently William had retired as no occupation is listed for him on the 1930 Census.
Family records indicate Sophia died in Lynch, Nebraska and she and William died the same year, 1937.

Sophia was my great grandmother's sister.

Sophia's father's name was Joachim Heinrich Christian Cordes, and his nick name was Chris. (1823-1908) His burial site is unknown at this time.
