Maude Virginia Babin Ellis Spurlock, a resident of Denham Springs, passed away Monday, May 24, 2010, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet. Visitation at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, Wednesday, May 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at First Baptist Church, Denham Springs, Thursday, May 27, from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., officiated by Dr. David Womack and the Rev. Jan Holloway. Burial in Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery. She was 86, born Sept. 4, 1923. She graduated from Denham Springs High School in 1940 and attended Baton Rouge Business College from 1940 to 1941. She married Alton J.W. Ellis on Feb. 7, 1942, and had two children, Donna Fay Ellis, born Dec. 16, 1944, and George Edward Ellis, born on Sept. 4, 1953, her 30th birthday. She was employed by Brignac Dodge and Livingston State Bank before assisting in opening the family business, Ellis Electric Co., on March 30, 1946. Her son, George Ellis, now owns and operates the business. An active member of First Baptist Church in Denham Springs since age 11 in 1934, she belonged to affiliated church organizations, taught Sunday school and served on committees. On Oct. 3, 1941, at the age of 18, she joined Mystic Star Chapter 108, Order of the Eastern Star, was worthy matron in 1958 and worthy grand matron of the state of Louisiana in 1970. She then continued to serve in all areas as long as her age and health permitted. On Feb. 17, 1980, she married Donald Helms Spurlock, who was her worthy grand patron in the Grand Chapter of Louisiana. She is survived by her son, George Edward Ellis; a large extended family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Alton J.W. Ellis (1942-1978) and Donald Helms Spurlock (1980-1995); daughter, Donna Faye Ellis (1944-1946); parents, Lula Camillia Stafford Wax Babin Wilkinson and George William Babin; sister, Serena Wax Womack; and brothers Earl Roy Wax and Johney Boyd Wax. Pallbearers will be Dr. Barton Lloyd Wax, Bryan Tyler Wax, Tommy Bridges Womack, Dr. John Patrick Harris, Wesley Byron Lee, James Truett Howze, William Ashland Jones and Jude Anthony Cambre.
