Thomas E. Dewey matriculated at the University of Rochester and pursued his studies after moving to Kansas at Emporia College, where he received A.B.; A.M.; and Litt, D. Degrees. Admitted to the bar in 1883 and practiced law in Abilene until 1889, when he was appointed Reporter for the Supreme Court of Kansas. He was raised a Master Mason in Benevolent Lodge No. 98, December 20, 1888, and was Master in 1893. He was six feet five inches tall. His personal appearance and physical characteristics, power of language and speaker of purest diction made him a prominent figure in any assembly.
