Branson, Jewel Joan, 91, died Feb. 4, 2012. Graveside Services 1 p.m. Thursday, Branson Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy and Jewel Hurst. After college, Joan worked in the fields of journalism and public relations. She was a member of several organizations and also served as a volunteer with various public service agencies. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Survivors include: husband, John Jerald Branson, whom she married on St. Valentine's Day in 1945. To them were born three surviving daughters, Jan, Jody and Julie and five grandchildren, Kendall, Jarrod, Kalissa, Molly Joanne and George. She will be greatly missed by all. A memorial has been established with the Andover Genealogical Library

Jewel Joan Branson was born on the 7th of May 1920 in Wichita, Kansas, the only child of Jewel and Hardy Hurst. Joan was exceedingly bright and moved up two letter grades when she was in elementary school. This was how and where she met her future husband, John Jerald “Jerry” Branson. They were married on the 14th of February 1945.
She attended Wichita East High and went on to major in music at Belmont College in Tennessee. Joan moved back to the Midwest, graduating from University of Missouri with a degree in journalism. She was in the Chi Omega sorority.
Joan’s first job right out of college was in Mexico, Missouri as an Assistant Reporter and copy editor. During the second World War, Joan worked for the Red Cross in publication.
A little-known fact about Joan is that she was a gifted artist. She loved traveling, both for fun as well as for tracing back family history. Joan was a highly intellectual individual whose favorite games were the strategy kind. Up until her final months she was a sharp card player. Two of her favorite card games were Bridge and Hearts. Her favorite books were Agatha Christie mysteries and she would always be trying out new recipes. One of her favorite holiday treats was Peanut Butter Balls. One year, she was caught stowing a couple away in her nightstand. She is currently buried with one.
Jewel Joan and her husband were both quite philanthropic during their lives. Red Cross, East Minster, Friends University, Salvation Army, Butler Community College, Wichita Children’s Home, and El Dorado prison were just a few. She was a deacon and an elder at East Minster Presbyterian Church.
Though Joan was cerebral and introverted, she was still quite sociable. She belonged to quite a few of clubs, including the Daughters of the Revolution, Founders and Patriots and was the president of Rotary Anns.
Joan passed away on the 4th of February 2012. She was survived by her husband until August of the same year (10 August 2012). Her remaining living relatives are her three daughters: Janice Branson, Jody Branson and Julie Bachman, all of Wichita, KS and five grandchildren.
