Her father was Charles Victor Johnson and her mother, Clara (Dickson) Johnson. Clara was living in Oregon when Evelyn died.

In 1938 she graduated from the Harrington High School. She attended Washington State University but because of her physical frailness she returned to Harrington and lived with her father.

She married Paul M. Schailzel 9 August 1941 Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. He was born 2 April 1918 and he died 13 February 1992 while living in the area of Dillon, Montana.

The pastor at her funeral described her as "a young woman who, from early childhood and throughout her life, had borne heavy burdens. Despite the bitter discouragements and disappointments that were hers, she concealed her sorrows and lived in a way to bring happiness to others.' This is clearly shown when her father became gravely ill for many months she tenderly cared for him.

After his death she stayed in the family farm home. Here she was found in a coma and taken to the Spokane Hospital.

She had one daughter:
Carol Schailzel
