Don was the youngest child of Alfred J. and Peninnah Arsulia(Decker)Smith. He always claimed he was born on Jones Rd. in Blackman Twp., Jackson, Michigan. Abt 1918 he married Irene L. Butler in Ohio. They had two children: Helen Irene and Howard Arthur. When Don's wife decided to leave him and the children behind to pursue a different love interest he moved back to Michigan, bringing his children with him. His brother, June and wife cared for them until Don remarried.

On 12 Aug 1927 Don married Agnes Irene Warner in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio. They have one son: Loyd Donald.

During the depression years Don worked at most any type job he could find, often leaving the city or state in pursuit of employment. In 1930 he was working as a laborer in a factory in Lansing, Michigan. Eventually he found steady work as a machinest at Clark Equipment Company in Jackson, Michigan; he retired from this job.

Prior to his retirement he bought shoe-repair equipment and began practicing on family shoes. He became so proficient that he became well known throughout the Leslie and surrounding areas as the "shoe repair man"
