"Mr. Alex Owens, a prominent Evergreen citizen and Confederate veteran died at his home Saturday afternoon at 8 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks. He was 79 years of age and moved to Evergreen twenty years ago from Marion.
Mr. Owens was a member of the Methodist church and was a devoted Christian. Funeral services were held at his home Monday morning at 9 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. Sojourner. The body was carried to Marion and interment was made in the Baker cemetery.
Mr. Owens is survived by his widow and the following children: Mrs. Emily Poston of Poston, Mrs. Sandy Baker of Centenary, Mrs. Fletcher Davis of Georgia, Miss Sallie Owens, of Evergreen, Mr. David Owens of Marion and Mr. Baker Owens of Evergreen. Mr. Owens was loved and respected by all who knew him and his death has caused general regret and sorrow."

Owens, a prominent and highly esteemed citizen of Florence County, who had just spent practically all of his long and useful life as a citizen of Marion County, died at his home in Effingham, S. C., on April 14th. inst., at 8:30 p.m., in the eightieth year of his age. All of his family were at the bedside save his youngest daughter, Mrs. P. F. Davis, who lives in Bainbridge, Ga.
Mr. Owens, the son of A. D. G. and Susan E. Owens, was born on May the 21st, 1848. Enlisted when a mere boy and served in the Confederate army. At the conclusion of the war, he returned home and on Dec. 17th., 1868 married Miss Josephine Harrell. To them were born eight children, six of whom, with their mother, survive, namely: Mrs. Charles Poston, of Poston; W. David Owens, of Marion; R. Baker Owens, of Effingham; Mrs. P. F. Davis, of Bainbridge, Ga.; and Miss Sallie Owens, of Effingham.
Mr. Owens was a devout Methodist and supported his church liberally. His well spent life was rich in service for God and his fellowman. A large and representative number of friends and relatives attended the funeral which was conducted by the Rev. J. R. Sojourner, assisted by the Rev. L. B. T. Williams, at the Baker Cemetery, a few miles south of Marion, where they laid him to rest."

Now the battle day is past,
Now upon the farther shore,
Lands the voyager at last.
Father, in thy gracious keeping,
Leave we now thy servant sleeping."
