Although Joseph's middle name was "Chase" he was not related in any way to the Chase family of Martha's Vineyard. It was told to me by Joseph's grandson, also named Joseph Chase Allen, that the family lived the next farm over to the Chase family. The two men became fast friends and as close as brothers. Joseph's father, Benjamin, therefore gave his first son the middle name of Chase in honor of his friend.

Joseph was the son of Benjamin Allen Jr. and Delia Robinson. He married Ann C. Howland on the 20 Feb. 1857 in Chilmark, Dukes Cty, Mass.
