DOGS STAND GUARD OVER HERMIT'S BODY

WICHITA FALLS, TEX.
Police shot two of three snarling dogs Sunday to get to the body
of Earl Cleveland Arbuckle-the "Hermit of the Wichita River".
Arbuckle had lived for a long time in a two room shack on a
small island in the river. He had no boat and when floodwaters
covered the island he would climb on top of the shack until the
water went down. He was a familiar sight walking the streets of
Wichita Falls with his dogs. Asked frequently why he lived by himself
on an island, he would reply: "I want to get away from it all".
Arbuckle was found dead in his shack Sunday. His three dogs were
standing guard over him and wouldn't let the police near his body.
Officers finally had to shoot two of the dogs, who fell dead on the
old man's body. The third dog ran.
