Hattie was the second of ten children born to James Thomas and Julia C. (Peck) Hartman. She married (1) James Alexander Kluttz in 1912 and they had six children: Eunice, James Thomas Martin 'J.T.', Mary Lea, (infant), Helen Virginia and Reece Alexander. She married (2) George Thomas Brown.
