James Robert Belcher
James Robert "Chief" Belcher, 74, of 331 Alphin Ave., Waynesboro died Thursday (May3, 2001) in Chesapeake Va. He was born Oct. 27. 1926 in Abbeville, Ala., a son of Robert Hoyt and Lucille Sowell Belcher. He was a veteran of WW II,
surviving the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and retiring in 1969 with 22 years of service. He worked in quality control for both General Electric and Genicom; an officer of the Valley Industrial Credit Union. He was also a member and former trea- surer of the Waynesboro Moose Lodge. He was an avid gardener,
woodworker and fisherman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one
brother, William Bryce Belcher. Surviving are his wife, Toyoko "Toni" Belcher; three
sons and two daughters-in-law, William "Bill" Belcher of Chesapeake. James R. Jr. and Sandi Belcher of Waynesboro, and Jack Franklin and Karen Belcher of Beaumont, Calif.; one sister and her husband, Monette B. and Harris Riley of Dothan, Ala.; one brother, Thomas F. Belcher of Rockville, Md; six grandchildren, Jimmy Joey, Amy Carole, Alexis and Victoria Belcher; a special "daughter" Patricia Baxter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at McDow Funeral
Home led by Robert Belcher. Interment will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Waynesboro with honors conducted by repre- sentatives of Virginia Military Institute. Active pallbearers will be Keith Allamong, Bobby Belcher, Mark Belcher, Thomas Belcher, Bob Briggs, Darryl Gum. Marty Miller and Steve Poland. Honorary pallbearers will be Stan Calder, Phil and Edith Dollins, Kenneth Givens, Wally Kennedy. Paul Moran and Don Trohaugh. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
