Donald M. Bayer, 78, of Yuma, died May 13, 2010, in Yuma.

He was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Brainerd, Minn., was a retired city planner and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

No services are planned. Yuma Mortuary and Crematory is handling arrangements, including cremation.

After courageously battling ALS, (Lou Gerhig's Disease) for the past five years, Donald M. Bayer passed away peacefully May 13, 2010 at his winter residence in Yuma, Arizona with his wife Patricia at his bedside.

Don was born September 27, 1931 in Brainerd, Minnesota and grew up in Chicago and Boston with his parents Joseph and Frances Bayer. He attended Boston College until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1951. He married Patricia Blood in 1954 and finished getting his college degree at George Washington University in 1956.

In 1960 Don moved his young family from Washington, D.C. to Albuquerque, New Mexico to take a job as one of the first urban renewal planners in the Southwest. Then in 1966 he moved his family to Reno where he had accepted a position with the Regional Planning Department of Washoe County. He worked for Washoe County for the next 14 years.

In 1981 Don was selected to oversee the incorporation of the City of Clear Lake, California. 1985 he returned full-time to his home in Sparks. Upon his return to Northern Nevada, Don accepted a position with the State of Nevada Legislative Council Bureau Research Division working on the Yucca Mountain Project.

Don retired in 1993 and he and Pat traveled extensively from their home base in Sparks. They purchased a winter home in Yuma and split time between Northern Nevada and Arizona for the past 18 years.

Don is survived by wife Patricia, daughter Cynthia (Rob) Paszak, son Mark (Stella) Bayer, daughter Patrice and two granddaughters and four great grand children.

A Memorial service and celebration of Don's life is planned for Saturday June 19, 2010 in Reno. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to: ALS of Nevada, 1575 Deluchi Lane, Suite 223, Reno, NV 89502 or go to WWW.ALSOFNEVADA.ORG.
