The following information is from W. D. Lanier, Soldier's Application for
Pension, # 41000, Smith County, Texas, filed April 9, 1925, and approved July 1,
1925:

Private, Company E, 37th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, CSA

William D. "Dick" Lanier was born in Madison County, Alabama. He enlisted
October 8, 1861 at Paint Rock, Alabama. He was discharged by reason of Conscript
Law on November 1, 1862.

Serving in the same company were his brother Clem Lanier, who was killed in the
battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and his cousin Richard Lanier, who was
captured and died at Fort Delaware as a Prisoner of War.

William D. Lanier died on January 5, 1939 at Nan Travis Hospital in
Jacksonville, Cherokee County, Texas.
