This information is taken from notes prepared by Ralph Whiting, son of Floyd Whiting and Julia Seifert, Hancock, Delaware Co., New York.

David Barber was said to have been born to Gideon S. Barber and Rachael M. Bailey on or about October 12, 1822. However, I have not been able to locate a "David" in any of the census records showing him in the household of Gideon & Rachel to verify that. In fact, the use of "David" as a boy's name was apparently not common in the time period David Barber was born... nor can I locate a Harriet C., David's sister, who was reported to be born to Gideon and Rachael. I am perplexed over this, but will continue to search. Another point of interest is Gideon is on one census report listed as what appears to be "Gilleon" and was typed as such...which means unless the searcher types the name as it appears on the census, it won't come up.

On the plus side, David and Betsey are listed on the 1850 Census for Town of Gilboa, County of Schoharie, NY, living with a Henry and Amy Gardener and a Robert Barber, working as farm laborers. Betsey is 31, David is 26, and Robert is 19. Who is Robert?

David was married to Betsey E. Goff. To this marriage was born two girls... Mary Francis and Martha "Alice."

David was a Civil War veteran. Civil War records indicate that he enlisted at Goshen, NY, to serve one year and was mustered in as private, Co. F., 56th Regiment, New York Volunteers, October 12, 1864, age 40. The 56th was known as the "Tenth Legion". He was mustered out with the Company, October 17, 1865, at Charleston, SC.

David was a carpenter by trade. He died at his home near Lackawaxen, March 11th, 1905, at age 80. The death certificate was made out in Ulster Co., village of Ellenville. It stated that he was a resident there for three months and was 82 years, 4 months and 29 days old. He was buried at Partridge Island Cemetery, Fishs Eddy, Delaware Co., NY, with wife Betsey E. Barber who died October 5, 1903, at age 84.
