Ransom was one of eight sons born to Richard G. Gibbs and Sarah Ann Kite Gibbs. His family moved from Pitt Co., NC to Fayette Co., GA prior to 1840. By 1850, the family was living in Randolph Co., AL. Seven of the Gibbs sons fought in the CSA during the Civil War. Three sons died, including Ransom.

Ransom married Eliza Cosper of Randolph County, AL circa 1853 and they had the following children:

Benjamin Franklin Gibbs
Sarah Elizabeth Gibbs
Nancy "Nan" E. Gibbs
Ranson Edwin "Park" Gibbs
Tennessee "Tennie" Gibbs

Ransom enlisted in the CSA as a Private, Company K, 13th Regiment Alabama Infantry on July 26, 1861 in Randolph Co., AL. He died in General Hospital #21 in Richmond, Virginia on December 09, 1862. They couldn't find his name on the records for Hollywood or Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond Virginia.

Cause of death: Variola Confluent (smallpox).
