FREDERICK, MD - George R. Callahan, 82 of Frederick passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010 at the Kline Hospice House.
He was the loving husband for 61 years to Doris Zimmerman Callahan.
Born in Cambridge, MA on June 16, 1927, a third generation Irish immigrant, he was the son of the late Anne T. (Dwyer) and James Callahan.
At the age of 15, George joined the Merchant Marines to help defend his country during WW II. He continued in the Armed Services joining both the Navy and Marine Corps.
George was an accomplished brick mason, having membership in the Washington, DC Bricklayer's Union. He worked on the construction of the Underground Pentagon. He had also worked as a trainer/instructor for JOB CORP.
Memberships included the Frederick AMVETS, both the Frederick and Brunswick American Legions and the Brunswick Eagles.
He was a member of the Catholic faith.
Besides his wife Doris, he is survived by his children; Linda Boniface (partner Michael Moran) of Frederick, David R. Callahan (Shelley McVicker) of New Market, Timothy James Callahan of Washington, DC and Teresa C. Hastings (John) of Bishopville; four grandchildren, Benjamin Judd Boniface, Sara Brooke Boniface, Kate E. August and Kristin Bodmer; three great-grandchildren Judd Patrick Boniface, Josie Erin Boniface and Christopher J. August; and one brother, Jack Callahan of Massachusetts.
Services were at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 6th at 2:00 pm. Burial with military honors followed in Linden Hills Cemetery.
