Son of William Franklin McKinney, Sr., and Mary A. "Polly" Boone.

He married on Dec. 18, 1867, to Mrs. Sarah Anna Story Rupe, daughter of John Story and Mary Posey. Ceremony officiated by L. J. A. Prather, Minister of the Gospel in Clay Co., MO.

William was a druggist, whose medicinal knowledge was called upon by a desperate surgeon during the Civil War. The surgeon asked him if he had had the small pox, which William did as a child. Then he was furnished a horse and was sent out to care for isolated prisoners with the disease.

His story can be found in a history of Lafayette Co., MO, written in 1881, by his granddaughter, Mrs. Bennita McKinney Branch.
