Joseph is a son of William Henry and Nancy Elizabeth Sharp Arnold. The family moved from South Carolina to Atlanta sometime before 1900, and there he married Edyth Cofield about 1905. Joseph and Edyth are the parents of three children: 2 boys and 1 girl. Before 1920, they moved to Savannah. After his wife died in 1928, he moved to Duval County, Florida, where he worked as a supervisor with the telephone company. He married Fannie Blackshear Robinson on September 12, 1931.
