Johann Augustus Bretschneider was born in Sachsen (Saxony), Germany, in 1838. He came to the United States about 1858 and headed to California. He enlisted as "John" Bretschneider at Marysville October 21, 1864, and was mustered into Company B, 7th California Infantry, October 31. Private Bretschneider was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco, April 26, 1866 (Orton, 771). John Bretschneider became a U.S. citizen January 17, 1870. John was admitted to the Veterans Home of California December 5, 1893. He died at the veteran's home and was buried in the home cemetery. His surname was mis-spelled on his government headstone.
