Sarah Maria Monroe was born in Otsego County, NY the daughter of Hassan Monroe and Olive Lusk Nash. She married Thomas Coburn, from Scotland, July 20, 1850 New York. The couple resided in Springfield Twp., Otsego, NY where Thomas worked as a blacksmith. Here a son, Hassan Monroe Coburn, was born to them July 3, 1853. Sarah and Thomas left Springfield Township after 1860 and moved to Americus Township, Lyons County, Kansas, residing there until Thomas' death.

After 1885, Sarah, son Hassan, his wife Kate Webster, their two children Florence & John Albert, and Kate's widowed Mother Martha Dunbar Webster left Kansas and immigrated to Washington. Residing first in Port Angeles City, Clallam Co. and then Seattle, King County, Washington.

Sarah passed away in 1913 and her ashes rest in Wright Crematory & Colunmbarium. She was survived by her son Hassan & wife Kate, grandchildren Florence & husband James Embree & John Albert Coburn; two g,grandsons Howard Charles & Jack Lucius Embree.
