Professor Erastus Lathrop "E.L." Ripley was a Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State Normal School from 1861-1867. In 1867, the Board of Curators of the State of Missouri established the "College of Normal Instruction." E.L. Ripley ofMichigan Normal School was elected as the first Normal Professor and his wife was appointed Principal of the new "Model School." They served until 1878. He then took a position as Shelbina Collegiate Academy as principal and later at Bryant school as principal. His wife Caroline, also an educator held positions at all of these schools as well.
