SUDBURY - Carl Boyer Becker of Sudbury, 88, passed away Saturday, Jan.12, 2008, after a short illness at the Wayland Hospice. Born in 1919 in Kulpsville, Pa., he attended Lansdale High School and later Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., where he was a member of the KRT, TDX, and captain of the track and 150 pound football team. Upon receiving his BA in economics in 1941, he joined the Marine Corps in June of that year. After graduating Officer Training school in Quantico, Va., he was stationed in Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides, as Quartermaster for the 11 Marine Air Group. Later in 1944, as a Captain he served as the commanding officer Aviation Supply School Quartermaster Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C. In the fall of 1945 he was stationed in Tientsin, China. Later in 1952 he was promoted to Lt. Colonel and then retired from inactive status.
In 1946 Carl married Marthanna Branaman and joined the Mobil Oil Corporation and over the course of 36 years worked in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Springfield, as district manager, and Boston, as the regional pricing manager. He served as a deacon in the First Church of Christ in Longmeadow, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Colony Club and Chamber of Commerce of Springfield. He also served as deacon at the Sudbury Memorial Church and was a member of the Algonquin Club and Chamber of Commerce of Boston.
After retiring in 1982, he pursued his interest in Early British and American lighting as well as early Western Massachusetts History. A resident of Sudbury for 44 years, he was a member of the VFW, Retired Men's Association, and the Masonic Lodge of Lincoln. As of this year he achieved the 50 year member recognition by the Masons. He participated in the intergenerational teaching programs "Bridges" at the Sudbury Schools and swam regularly at the Atchinson Senior Center up until mid-summer 2007. He is survived by his two sons, John C. of Weston, and Jeffrey B. of Brookline, their wives, Georgiana and Heidi, and two grandchildren Ashley E. of Arlington, Va., and John W. of Weston. Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Wayside Hospice, 246 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778; or Emerson Hospital Hematology and Oncology, John Cuming Building, Concord, MA 01742.
